A God in Ruins (2015) by Kate Atkinson is the companion to Life After Life — a novel about Ursula Todd's younger brother Teddy, a gentle, bird-loving boy who becomes an RAF bomber pilot during the Second World War and then must live a single long life in the aftermath, knowing that he survived when so many of his crew did not. Where Life After Life fragmented a woman's life into infinite versions, A God in Ruins follows one man through one life — from childhood in the 1920s through marriage, parenthood, and old age — and asks what it means to survive when you expected to die, and what the rest of a life is for. It won the Costa Novel Award in 2015.
