A Gentleman in Moscow Reading Order
Amor Towles's A Gentleman in Moscow (2016) is a complete standalone novel. There is no sequel. In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest in Moscow's Metropol Hotel by a Bolshevik tribunal — sentenced to live the rest of his life in the hotel's attic room rather than shot, because of a poem he wrote before the Revolution. The novel follows the count across the following 32 years as Russia changes around him and he builds a full life within the hotel's walls.

A Gentleman in Moscow — Frequently Asked Questions
Is A Gentleman in Moscow a standalone?
Yes — A Gentleman in Moscow is a complete standalone novel. Amor Towles has written other standalone novels (Rules of Civility, The Lincoln Highway), but A Gentleman in Moscow is entirely independent.
Do you need to know Russian history to read A Gentleman in Moscow?
No. A Gentleman in Moscow is a character novel first — the Count's wit, his values, his friendships, and his ability to make a rich interior life within severe constraints are the novel's subject. Russian history from the 1920s through the 1950s forms the backdrop, and Towles builds in enough context that the story works without prior knowledge.
Is A Gentleman in Moscow sad?
A Gentleman in Moscow is primarily a warm and humane novel — it believes in manners, friendship, beauty, and the pleasures of a well-made life, and the Count embodies these beliefs even in constraint. It deals with loss, with the passage of time, and with what happens to people under a totalitarian system, but it is not a dark book. Most readers describe it as the best novel they've read for making them feel that life is worth living.
Is A Gentleman in Moscow being adapted?
Yes — A Gentleman in Moscow was adapted as a Paramount+ / Sky Atlantic limited series in 2024, starring Ewan McGregor as Count Rostov. The series received positive reviews and was praised for McGregor's performance and the recreation of the Metropol Hotel's interior.
