Carlo Emilio Gadda's La cognizione del dolore is the most linguistically audacious of the great Italian modernist novels — a pastiche of Milanese dialect, literary Italian, bureaucratic language, and neologism in which Gonzalo Pirobutirro's grief for his brother (killed in WWI) and his complicated love-hatred for his mother generate one of the most extreme prose styles in twentieth-century fiction. These eight books share its quality: the maximalist novel where linguistic excess is itself the subject, grief transposed into formal experiment, and fiction where the incompleteness is part of the meaning.
