Books Like Gaspard, Melchior & Balthazar

Books for readers who loved Tournier's philosophical retelling of the three Magi

Michel Tournier's 1980 novel gives each of the three wise men a full philosophical interiority — Gaspard's obsession with blondness and beauty, Melchior's displaced royalty, Balthazar's aestheticism — and adds a fourth, Taor, who arrives too late for the Nativity but in time for the Last Supper. These eight books share its spirit: literary retellings of sacred or mythological stories, novels that give interiority to figures who were only symbols, and fiction where the journey is the theology.
