Books Like El Criticón (The Master Critic)
Books for readers who loved Gracián's three-part moral allegory of the world
Baltasar Gracián's El Criticón (1651–57) is a three-part allegorical novel in which Critilo the civilized man and Andrenio the natural man journey through the moral atlas of the world from youth to old age, encountering Vice, Virtue, and Wisdom in allegorical form. These eight books share that tradition of the moral journey: allegories of human life from birth to death, novels where the world is traveled as a philosophical education, and fiction where the landscape is itself a moral argument.
